Constitution Amendment (married women’s right) Bill 2015

LONG TITLE

A BILL FOR AN ACT TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA 1999 TO PROVIDE A NIGERIAN WOMAN MARRIED TO A NIGERIAN MAN WHO IS NOT OF THE SAME STATE OF ORIGIN AS THE MAN THE RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES  OF THE STATE

EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM

This Bill seeks to amend the Constitution to provide for the rights and privileges of the state of a man married to a Nigerian woman who is not of the same state of origin as the man.

Sponsors: Hon. Lynda Chuba Ikpeazu, Hon. Betty Apiafi

This is a House Bill seeking to promote equality among women married to men from other states. I really think a woman should be allowed to contest elections in her adopted state of origin. Asides Lagos, other States still discriminate against women when it comes to enjoying their full rights and privileges.

Imagine an Igbo woman from delta married to a young Hausa man from Biu town in Borno State. She is not constitutionally allowed to contest elections in Biu, while she is also silently unconstitutionally not allowed her full rights and privileges in her native town; simply because her last name is Babagana.
